Automized: The Green Light Project
The University Student Government and the Mechanical Engineering Society of De La Salle University will be holding an advocacy-based car show competition entitled “Automized: The Green Light Project”. This two-day car show will be held at the Philippine National Bank (PNB) Main Office grounds along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard, Pasay City on March 17-18, 2012.
In partnership with PNB, the car show aims to raise funds for the Child Friendly Spaces Project of the University Student Government.
The event will run from 9am to 10pm on the first day and 8am to 10pm on the second day; and will showcase various talents, interest and hobbies of car enthusiasts, particularly those from the Lasallian community.
The event will feature performers, exhibitors and car dealers. Guests may also avail of great deals through PNB’s special auto loan rates during the event.
Organizational Roles
The University Student Government (USG) recognizes its vital role in promoting students’ holistic formation through different programs and activities aimed to address the needs and interests of the students, including community development projects. On the other hand, the Mechanical Engineering Society (MES) is the professional organization of Mechanical Engineering students, which caters to the needs and interests of their members, including organizing car shows, which are in line with their field of profession.
Child Friendly Spaces
This year, in line with the University’s mission of bridging faith and scholarship in service of the poor, the USG, together with the DLSU Center for Social Concern and Action spearheaded the Child Friendly Spaces Project. It is an advocacy in line with the UN Millennium development goals to give safety and security to the children in deprived communities by creating child friendly spaces for them. The space consists of a daycare, study area, mini library and a computer room. The first child friendly space was constructed this school year in Baranggay 704 in Malate Manila. Through the project, the USG may be able to attain sustainability of their efforts not only to help the children but the community as a whole. Together with MES through the Automized 2012: The Greenlight Project, they plan to expand and create more child friendly spaces in the upcoming school year.

Ways to Reduce Global Warming
As a student, there are simple ways we can do to help in reducing global warming.
Here are some of the ways I have thought of:
1. Stop burning wastes.
Most of the homeowners in our subdivision burn their garbage, which I think is one of the top contributors in global warming. It will be beneficial then if our family will try to lead by example in not burning trashes. I think it will be more effective if we will cooperate with the barangay with their Garbage Collection Program. This way, carbon emissions will be lessen drastically.
2. Plant trees.
Though it is very simple, I believe that this will be very effective in reducing carbon emissions since plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Hence, there will be less carbon dioxide trapped in the earth's atmosphere.
3. Use fluorescent lights.
According to studies, fluorescent lights use is a more efficient lighting tool than regular light bulbs (http://environment.about.com/od/globalwarming/tp/globalwarmtips.htm). Fluorescent lights releases less heat compared to regular light bulbs. Hence, it eliminates pounds of greenhouse gas.
Rokeach Value Survey Results
We answered the Rokeach Value Survey in class last time. The survey asked us to rank terminal and instrumental values, separately, from the most importance to the least importance for us.
Rokeach defined instrumental values as values consisting, primarily, of personal characteristics and character traits. While terminal values, on the other hand, are those things that we can work toward or we think are most important and that we feel are most desirable. (http://faculty.weber.edu/molpin/healthclasses/1110/bookchapters/valueschapter.htm)
I listed the top five of my terminal and instrumental values below.
Terminal values,
Salvation
Family Security
Freedom
Inner Harmony
An Exciting Life
Instrumental Values
Loyal
Loving
Broad-minded
Courageous
Forgiving
What difference does this make to me? Probably, now I know which things I value more in life the most - my faith, family, friends and myself.
I always would like to believe that my faith will be the force to guide me to purpose in this world, which is why I ranked it first. Second, my family and friends are my greatest encouragement in life. They are the ones who always keep me sane despite all the hardships I face in college. Which is another reason why I always be faithful to them. In conclusion, I guess I can say that the values I am prioritizing right now are those that are close to my heart.
